What's the next big thing

Hello everybody,

I just completed CCNP, and I was wondering what is next obstacle (degree or cert). I personally would choose CEH, but that's not marketable I think. What is big out there nowadays?

Voice is in high demand and will be for the next few years. CCVP/CCIE Voice are in short supply.

Aside from that virtualization is becoming very big. VMWare/KVM/Xen Kernel are all very popular. The most common I know of though is VMWare.

What kind of stuff do you work with? It doesn't make much sense to get certified in something if you aren't working with it IMO.

Marketable would have to include security (CCSP) and voice (CCVP). Networker's right, try to go with what you work with... though if you're looking for maximum marketability, then I don't think you can afford to overlook security and voice.
There are only 10 kinds of people... those who understand binary, and those that don't.

Thanks everybody for your response. True, CCVP is in short supply and companies are running to VoIP. but, it's not used that much here.

Yep, it doesn't hurt to get CCNA Voice out of the way. Once you get to work with a lot of VoIP then probably move on to CCVP. It doesn't make sense to jump on the CCVP if you don't get to work with voice, in my opinion.

I would say if you don't use voice, then don't focus your time learning it since you won't be using it. I would say go after CCNA Security and CCSP, since I'm sure they would come in handy where your at or any other place you would decide to move to. Possibly even after that get a combination of CEH. CEH is really kinda eh, it's marketable but it all depends on the location your in and what the hiring person is looking for. In my location they look at it as a big accomplishment.

I am going for CCSP and CCDP after CCNP, (CCDP really casues its just one more exam and might qas well get it ;) )

But the next big thing is virtulisation, and the removaly of physical servers. CISCO have there unified arcatucture models. The idea of having banks of processing power, memory and storage, that you can grab chunks of as and when you need it for application is what people are looking at.

I know VMware are looking ant virtual app's where you don't even have a traditional operating system running underneath them.

I know people are talking about the "CLOUD" all the time, but it can be hard to work out what exactly it is they mean.

But this idea of seperating the software from the physical hard ware, is the way things are going to go. Its already quite advanced in networking. Think of routing where the process is vertulised over 100 or maybe thousands of routers.

I can see the server world going the same way, where the hardware is completly removed from the application, application on the network will work out on the fly what storage to use, the processors to run on, and memory banks to use, all based on the priority of the task (much like QOS on the network). Haed ware failer will just mean a slight drop in speed for low priority apps, data will get moved around based on how it is used.

My view is the hardware/virtulisation system infrastructure will deal with managing the storage, memory, and processing in the most efficent manor. Leaving the administrato to be able to create an application, set a priority and leave the system to it.

If I was going to do any study out side of core networking I would go for VMware, as I think this is the one that will really take off. It also of course is partowned by CISCO so with in VMware you can create a virtual CISCO switch that runs the IOS ;) The line between the server guys and the network guys is starting to blur.
