Global Catalog Question (70-640)

All,
I am studying for 70-640 and have a global catalog question. This is from one of the questions that came with the practice tests on the CD:
"You manage an Active Directory forest with four different locations. Each location has a separate domain, with two domain controllers per location.
The four locations are connected by wide area network (WAN) links. Because of a WAN failure, one of the locations is isolated from the rest of the network. However, one of the two local domain controllers is configured as a global catalog server.
Which of the following actions can users perform at the isolated location? (Choose all that apply.)"
"Log on as a user from a remote domain." ---> This is one of the correct answers.
Does this mean that the GC contains password data? I would think the password database would be in the domain where the user account lives. When the site loses network connectivity, the username and password would have to be matched against a database, right? I didn't think the GC held usernames AND passwords.
Comments appreciated!

drew2000 Member Posts: 290I guess this answers my question, but any confirmation would be appreciated:
WikiAnswers - What is the Global Catalog
"A global catalog server is a domain controller that, in addition to its full, writable domain directory partition replica, also stores a partial, read-only replica of ALLother domain directory partitions in the forest. "
So the read-only partition would contain the password information that would allow the user to log on.
