Which WGU major and why?

Howdy! I'm going to be starting at WGU next month. I am currently a police officer and have a background in corporate security. I will be doing the IT Security track as it builds off of my experience and I believe that the CCNA and CCNA:S that come with it will be valuable.

If you were to recommend a WGU concentration to someone with little to no IT experience, which one would you suggest and why?

I would tell them to take the BS in IT. This gives him/her a well rounded understanding of Information Technology and they can decide what niche of IT they want to work in later.

A Bachelor degree in this field is a Bachelor degree. The only real exception to that is the Computer Science degree that has above average respect in the IT world.

I wouldn't really be qualified without knowing the person.
No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives.

I can also tell you that a general IT degree would be more beneficial to you than jumping into a specialized area like, security. Physical security is something you would personally have an idea about, but the technical stuff would probably get you lost, and quickly.

I would rather you learn the basics first (crawl) before you get into specifics of an area of IT (walk). Then after a while, you should be able to intelligently explain IT security (run).
