Can you upgrade MCSE after 12-31-2010?

Hello,
I am currently MCSA.. I would like to knock out the 3 tests to get MCSE before retirement of the certification.
However, will I still be able to upgrade it to the new 2008 certification after the retirement? Or does it have to be an active certification to be upgraded?
I have to get MCSE for school... so thats why I would like to pursue it this way. If I can't upgrade it, I'd rather cut my losses and upgrade my MCSA in the next few months.
Thanks

They've put out a list of exams that are retiring through March, 2011, and none of the exams you need to take are on there. Interestingly though, the Exchange 2003 exams are retiring, so you will no longer be able to do the messaging specialization after that.

I couldn't help noticing the CIW Associate. Are you from WGU?
You have to complete that for WGU by Dec 31 because of WGU policy but those exams aren't retiring. The MCSE is also good for life. The cert never expires. You can upgrade to MCITP:SA/EA up until they retire the MCITP 2008 exams. The MCITP, unlike the MCSE, will have a shelf life and will eventually be classified as inactive after MS retires the cert.
