Pinging the local BMC IP address

If anyone knows about IBMs,

I needs to get a VMWare ESX host talking to the local BMC module of an x3850 M2. Basically how do you ping the BMC from the OS? I've set an IP address on the BMC which is on the same VLAN as the onboard NIC, and nothing.

Any ideas? VMware white papers talk nothing about the networking side and IBM docs are a convoluted mess.
