I thought I was all smart because I was going to add IMAP to your list and then found out that it was there and I just missed it.

But yes, 20 is for the actual transferring and 21 is for the control.

List of TCP and UDP port numbers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is a good place to reference, but as it contains so much information it is by no means something to try and memorize. I also like that it specifies TCP or UDP and has comments about things.

Actually the reason why I wrote that is because of the port review exam found at TE here. I missed 4 out of 20 icon_sad.gif so I needed a little review myself.

I missed 5, but I also think that the yahoo question was cheap...

You don't have Terminal Services: 3389.

If you have Darril's book, read his Well Known Ports section.

Also, I didn't get many port questions (in fact it was only one) and of course I can't tell you what that was, but I can tell you if you read the well known ports section, you should be ok.....

    b. ) "what service uses port 80?"
    c. ) "web pages use port 80. what protocol by default uses such port?"

yea thats my type of exam icon_cool.gif

It may be a good idea for the Security+ candidate know *BOTH* names.

Names really aren't important. If CompTIA asked for "Remote Desktop Services" and I had never heard it, I'm probably going to guess 3389 anyway. (I personally always call it RDP)

The only way they could screw you up is if they asked what port 3389 was and had both options as answers, which would be incredibly stupid.

This is what Wiki has to say on 3389.

I am familiar with both names....I use RDP every day at work and at home when I VPN in (plus dameware...[Prior to 2K8, Tuxedo would not allow me to boot up app servers via a TS/RDP session...Dameware took care of that but it's not an issue with 2K8 though...woo hoo!]). I've also been using TS Clients since NT 4.0, but that really was besides the point.

I don't want to belabor the point, but all I can say is it would be a good idea to be familiar with both names. As long as you know what 3389 does, you should be good to go.

I personally had only 1 port reference anywhere on the Sec+ and it wasn't RDP. All I'll say is that the name of the exam is Security so you may wish to concentrate on what ports are used for Secure things.
On a side note practically every port mentionned in this thread has come up somewhere so far in my CompTIA and MS studies. That wiki reference earlier is a good thing to have bookmarked for easy reference.
