I was wondering what the forum felt on this particular issue?

In my mind it seems more like a lateral, but I wanted to get peoples opinions who maybe have done both.

To be clarify from a tier 2 help desk remote role to a deskside/desktop role.

I haven't done both, just applied to a lot of jobs for both. Desktop support at some places is sometimes (almost) Jr Sys Admin work and is sometimes even posted as such. The job descriptions, and starting pay, are usually different with desktop support being more experience and skills required. Then again I have also applied for desktop support which also included doing a lot of remote support/assistance.
So it basically depends upon the place whether it' a lateral move or not.
No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives.

From my experience and also what I have seen it's like this:

    Tier 1 = helpdesk
    Tier 2 = desktop support
    Higher tier = ????????

Smaller companies seem to lump it all together and just call it helpdesk though.
