MSTP? is it important to put COST command?

Hi all,
Need confirmation from all expertise in this forum...I read doc regarding configuring MSTP. Some document put COST in MSTP command and some doc don't use COST. Is it important to pust COST command. What purpose of put COST. is it same function as cost in OSPF. As far i know the bridge-priority has be define which link will be primary for VLAN assignment... Can some one explain to me. Thanks...
