Advice to get into the technical writing field

I'd like to hear from someone who has been in the technical writing field, as it seems to be something I'd like to get into. How does one break into the field with no technical writing experience? I've read the boards like Dice, Monster, etc, but I'd still like to know what kind of salaries one can expect from those of you who are possibly doing it. Thanks.
