auxiliary vlan
You know, I read this all the time but I really have no idea what it means.
What is an "auxiliary vlan" I did a quick google search and nothing really makes it clear.

The other guys are correct. Aux VLANS deal with VOIP to segment VOIP from regular data when a PC is connected through an ethernet port on the IP phone. It basically lets you use an access port for an IP phone with a PC connected to it, while allowing both to be on seperate VLANs. If you have the Switch FLG, take a look at pg 488 and read about voice vlans. Here's another good link that describes Auxiliary VLANs. It starts on page 10-13. Ignore the configuration examples (auxillary vlans are config in ios with the switchport voice vlan cmd).

Throughout my CCNA's, i've heard about only a data and voice vlans and the first time i heard about a dot1p thing, was in old QoS and Switch guides. -

From the SWITCH exam blueprint description:The SWITCH exam also covers secure integration of VLANs, WLANs, voice and video into campus networks.
The old BCMSN blueprint was much more obvious about what you needed to study related to voice..... but at the professional level it's always a good idea to toss the relevent Cisco Documentation into your study plan.
There's probably a reference to auxiliary vlans in one of the suggested/additonal reading links/suggestions buried somewhere in the Switch books (or CDRom)
