Its been a while since I posted on study tools and there have been some developments around the web in that time frame...

Mind-mapping software
There are three decent free tools that I am aware of:

1. Xmind: v3.2.1. I haven't used this, but I've heard good things. This is the free version of a commercial product, Xmind Pro. You can compare the versions on the company's website.

2. Freeplane:v1.1.3. I've played with this and I do like it. It has some features freemind does not. Many users supposedly have jumped from freemind to freeplane. I guess one of the primary freemind developers also jumped over.

3. Freemind: v0.9.0. I have experience with this and v0.9.0 was finally released.

Flashcard tools

1. CueCard: v1.51. Use it, like it. Still use it for most things. Hasn't been maintained in a while.

2. Mnemosyne:v1.2.2. Use it, like it. Has some quirks I'm not fond of. Hasn't been maintained in a while.

3. Anki:v1.2.7. Haven't used it, still actively maintained. A lot of people like this tool and it will import CueCard and Mnemosyne cards...

Feel free to add to the list!
