Another DG pass

I passed the Security+ exam this afternoon with an 818.

About time too, this was my third time trying to take the exam. Originally tried to take it on February 9, but we got a ton of snow. Tried again on February 16, but the test center closed and Prometric never contacted me. And today, the test center was having problems communicating with Prometric. I had to wait an hour to be able to take my test.

As for what is on the test (without breaking the NDA), I was kind of surprised at the difficulty of some of the questions. Lots of questions on ports, malware and some other strange questions that didn't appear to have a correct answer.

    Congrats on the pass! icon_cheers.gif

Did at any time when studying or even taking the exam you feel like you should have gone for Network+ first? I'm asking because I'm planning to get both and I sort of set my eyes on Security+ first.

It is recommended that you knock out Network+ first if you're planning on doing both Net+ and Sec+. By all means, you can do Sec+ prior to Net+. It just makes Sec+, IMO a lot easier.

Congrats on the Pass - Good luck

Many Test takes recommend the N+ before this one as some ports and other stuff can be learned via the N+ route..

Depends on the networking experience you have. I have taken a few networking classes so already knew some of the conceptual questions (like the OSI model for example and what operates at what, like SSL at the Session layer).

I do plan on getting the Network+, I just wanted to get the Security+ knocked out first.

All the more reason to take the Network+ exam first...

Think about it, you were going to take both anyway...you already know the concepts of the Network+ exam, and whatever nugget you gain from the Network+ experience can only help with Security+....

If you're not in a serious time crunch..., do Network+ first and call it a day.

    Just sayin', btw.

    Yeah, I agree.

When I first started studying, I wasn't sure if I would be able to complete both. I figured since Security+ recommends Network+ I would start with that one and see how much time I have.

But if you have the time, I don't see a reason why anyone would skip. Right now I'm getting 80-90% on all Network+ practice exams. I do need to review the topologies and cable types, but other than that, I'm probably ready to take that test as well.

I agree as well; a good number of folks do the CompTIAs backwards. Nothing wrong with that...I myself just happened to do them in sequence. In my case, there was a 4.5 year gap between Network+ and Security+. I got scared off of taking the SY0-101. However for WGU, I had no choice but to take Security+ (SY0-201). When people were talking about the Darril Gibson book being all you needed, I was very skeptical...since I had a bunch of resources at my disposal (Transcenders and LabSim), I was more than ready to take this exam. I also knew that I wanted to have the lifetime cert...

When I sat for it though, almost all the questions were covered by Darril's book. I could have passed just with that book. I thought Security+ was such a hard exam, but it actually was cake. That's really why I became such a big fan of Darril...after I took the exam.

However, having said that, much of the Network+ stuff does come back to you...OSI model especially...I have still not forgotten it...lol.
