Greening of the Data Center - A Valuable Certification

PaladinPaladin Banned Posts: 57 ■■□□□□□□□□
Did you know that a 2006 study by the U.S. Department of Energy revealed that about 2.5% of the total electrical power produced by the U.S. is being consumed by IT equipment and facilities equipment located in Data Centers?

I am posting this information about an important 10-week online course in the Greening of the Data Center that will be taught at Marist College in Poughkeepsiie, NY. The cost is only $1000.

Also consider this, you can claim 6 hours of CPEs for each of those 10 weeks, so this can make a considerable dent in the annual CPE requirements for certifications like CISSP, SSCP, CISA, PMP, etc.

On another note, I am signing up for this course this week. I completed the Data Center Technology Certificate Program between January 2006 and March 2008, all online, 13 courses. I earned these certifications along the way and it was one of the smartest things I ever did for my IT career.
  • Certified Data Center Professional (No. 20 to ever graduate from this program)
  • Data Center Associate Certification in Product Development and Financial Planning
  • Data Center Associate Certification in Operations and Planning
  • Data Center Associate Certification in Security
  • Data Center Associate Certification in Networking
  • Data Center Associate Certification in Facilities Management
  • Data Center Associate Certification in Systems and Software

$1000 for an online course on this topic. Sounds like money for old rope to me.

I think this is an interesting part of IT, something managers should learn more about to contribute to meetings when planning on upgrades, building data centers.

How did it help your career if you don't mind me asking ? I am working in IT for 10+ years now and even in one of the largest online casinos I worked for, which had their own datacenter, most of the work was carried out by outsourced companies and I personally don't see how this can help an individual unless you are working for one of those outsourced companies which do build datacenters.

I think having an understanding would allow you to take more active role in the planning and decision making process. Even if it is outsourced your company is the paying customer and I think this will help you avoid being sold stuff you might not need.
