Security +

I passed my Security + exam today with a score of 813. I used the book Security+ Get Certified Get Ahead by Darril Gidson, Boson Sim. exam software and other online resources. I am not sure which cert I will pursue next. I work in IT as a IT Tech Specialist. I don't have a lot of IT background, but I'm getting the chance to get exposed to a lot of new technologies. I would like to land a position in IT security. Any suggestions as to which Cert I should get next?

    Congras on the pass.

As for you question on what to do next depends on what you want to do in security. Do you want to do network security? Pentesting? Server/workstation hardening? Forensics? There is a lot to do in this field. One thing you should know is you can't secure something you don't know or exploit services/programs you don't understand.

My suggestion is get some experience with what you want to do. If network is what you want then start with you cisco studies. If you want hardening and server/workstation security knowledge then start your microsoft studies. If you want to pentest then start learning all of them plus linux. Either way you need to know what you want to protect in order to protect it.

congrats on the pass. I took the test a few days ago and came up short with a 738 icon_sad.gif. I will do some more studying and attempt the test when extra cash is availiable, since my current gig does not pay for certifications.

Jam - I would beef up on some OS and network skills. When you start getting in to the higher level Security certs you will need to have some pretty decent knowledge regarding OS (Microsoft and/or *NIX) as well as network architecture, design, technology, etc.
