What exactly is an AD Scope/Forest root?

I get what a domain is...but since a tree is contiguous name space...what exactly defines where and what the forest root is? Is it the domainname.xxx? Does domainname.xxx define the scope of the AD? Thanks for the clarification...

The forest root domain is the first domain created in an Active Directory forest.
