Calling interviewer direct

A recruiter arranged an interview for me. Up until yesterday I was under the impression that the job was a long-term contracting role with an IT outsourcer that was permanently stationed at a client's site. After a chat with the recruiter's colleague yesterday, I am left with some doubt that this is the case which is a definite deal breaker.
The interviewing location is kinda difficult to get to and I can't get any time off from my current job. (another pretend lunch break) I don't want to attend an interview just to find out I was ill-informed and had wasted my time. As it's all been handled through a recruiter (who's word I feel I can't now rely on), would it be inappropriate of me to call the hiring company direct for a job rundown?
