Cisco switch 2950 problem

Guys I have a question, Would it be bad if I try to wipe the config, like they mention in this link
I say this because I still can't manage the switch via 'hyperterminal', here's the startup-config:
A bit of advice would be great. Thanks in advance.
I don't think that's going to help you really, isuggested that in an earlier post, just in case the con0 had some weird config against it. I don't think it would do any harm to wipe the switch. I would probably stick a new IOS on it whilst I was at it, just in case of some corruption and you could do with a higher feature set anyway.
All the issues that I've had like this have always boiled down to the PC, serial card or cable - but you've eliminated these.
I had a look at the show tech and there doesn't seem to be anything in there pertaining to the console port.
Perhaps we're all missing something simple here!!by now I would probably have opened the box up and checked the conections to the main board for corossion or damage, you never know.
At least you can manage the switch and get it going - I'll keep thinking about it and hope you get it sorted.Going all out for Voice. Don't worry Data; I'll never forget you

I just started the switch with the mode button on, and got a switch: prompt, and I couldn't type anything... This is all about a cable console-serial port bad right?
Dam it I already tried with two different pc's and three console cables, all of them seem to 'keep showing' the switch actions at hyperterminal.
I'm getting an optiplex620 cpu luckily will arrive this monday, which has a serial port... -

I talked to the seller and told me he succesfully tested the console port, If assuming he's right, is it okay to think there is something at the startup-config? is it okay to think the possibility to erase the whole configuration from the switch?
Thanks in advance. -

write erase
And then when you reload and it asks you if you want to save the running-configuration, say no.
It gets me nearly every time. -

Hi again, I think I might found something, I was fooling around and connected my default gateway to port 17 with a straight through cable, then I connected my laptop to port 20 (and then unplugget it later) with another straight through cable and got this:00:07:43: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface FastEthernet0/17, changed state to up 00:07:44: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface FastEthernet0/17, chan ged state to up 00:08:15: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Vlan1, changed state t o up 00:08:20: AUTOINSTALL: Vlan1 is assigned 192.168.1.93 00:08:20: AUTOINSTALL: Obtain siaddr 192.168.1.254 (as config server) 00:08:20: AUTOINSTALL: Obtain default router (opt 3) 192.168.1.254 %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/network-confg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/cisconet.cfg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/router-confg (Timed out) 00:10:27: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface FastEthernet0/20, changed state to up 00:10:28: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface FastEthernet0/20, chan ged state to down 00:10:30: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface FastEthernet0/20, chan ged state to up %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/ciscortr.cfg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/network-confg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/cisconet.cfg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/router-confg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/ciscortr.cfg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/network-confg (Timed out) 00:14:42: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface FastEthernet0/20, chan ged state to down %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/cisconet.cfg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/router-confg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.254/ciscortr.cfg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/network-confg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/cisconet.cfg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/router-confg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/ciscortr.cfg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/network-confg (Timed out) %Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/cisconet.cfg (Timed out)
I tried to telnet it, but:telnet 192.168.1.93 Trying 192.168.1.93... Connected to 192.168.1.93. Escape character is '^]'. Password required, but none set Connection closed by foreign host.
It just won't let me.
Looks like it's trying to boot from an tftp server? Like I said I'm pretty new to all this cisco stuff, I hope this 'extra info' helps and hope someone could help me to interpret this.
Hey guys, so I did what you suggested, write erase, so I'm quoting the output from before because, it's giving the output from before!
Well, as happened before I retrieved the network-confg file from tfpt server, and recovered remote access to the switch.
So I have a theory... maybe someone configured the switch just this way because he knew that console port is faulty somehow?
What do you guys think? -

There is nothing wrong with the switches behaviour. Previously you were erasing the start up configuration by issuing the erase start or the older write erase command. When the switch boots it then sees that it has no startup config contained in nvram then it will automatically search for a tftp server.
All signs seem to point to a faulty console port on the switch. -

I'm afraid I'm with Billy on this one, you may just have a dud, it happens. All you can do now is what I suggested earlier; check for any corroded or bent pins in the console socket and open it up and check from the socket to the board for corrosion maybe even tap it out with a multimeter.
I don't want to presume your wealth but these things are so cheap on eBay that it's not really worth your while digging in to it for much longer, especially if it's getting in the way of study - although I'm sure it's been an education anyway. A lot of the things this has taught you aren't on any certificationGoing all out for Voice. Don't worry Data; I'll never forget you

Hello guys, thank you for your replies
Unfortunately the problem points to be what you said, well it is okay I guess, like Chris said I learned some interesting things that I wouldn't have learned with a software/simulator/emulator, I guess I'll follow your advice to buy from ebay, just went for this one because it was in my country and no expensive shipping hehe, anyway I'll figure it out to buy from ebay and I know I know with one switch is not enough to practice for CCENT/CCNA, at least I think so.
I'm looking forward to complete Network+ certification, and then go for the CCNA, don't know yet <If i skipp Network+>
And I know this is completely out of the topic, but how many switches/routers do you recommend me for CCENT/CCNA, I know this may be the question of every week, but if it is possible I'd be more than glad hearing your suggestions.
Thanks in advance. -

In my opinion, two switches and two routers. 2950 and 2620XM.
Saved in NVRAM!Maybe I missed it, but did anyone suggest to try a new console cable?
Well, actually I did try with 3 cables, 2 I made them myself and another I borrowed from a teacher, I tried to plugged them each one at a time, and all of them stopped just in the exact output. However I think it would be good to try with a new one -

Not really, I was not aware of that technic and I do not have a multimeter at this moment...
I'm thinking of buying a new console cable instead of the multimeter, or would you recommend the multimeter instead -

Yeah, my bad, I guess I had to learn it the hard way
I'll buy it online in the next days, because I couldn't get it at a local store. What does your console cable look like? Can you take a picture of it?
Not very prettySure I can, and I will post it in a couple of hours.
Ps: Please do not laugh too hard, the poor cable has feelings toowhat up!

Have you tried rommon mode?
A console cable is just a rollover cable, so one side has pins 1-8 and the other has 8-1.
So do this, keep your computer and terminal program open and connected console cable to the switch. Unplug the switch (to power off) and wait 10 seconds and plug it in. This starts the boot process. Immediately issue control break to the terminal (try a few times and try it early or late in the process if it doesn't break immediately), this will break out of the booting and into the rommon mode. If this works, then your console is working and everything should work if you fix the configs. In this situation, you should stay in the rommon mode, and do the password recovery procedure (it just skips the config file so you can boot in and do stuff). -

These are the pictures of my cable.
And this is the manual I used for the db9 connector, the RJ-45 side said it could be used a 568B standard, so I did.Have you tried rommon mode?

Not really, but bucause I wasn't aware of that! Sounds terrific, I'll google for it and hope to show some results soon enough. -

Hmmm... from the look of those pics your cable might be suffering from some cross-talk. not sure if the copper needs to be exposed that much. also the twist in the wire pairs needs to be shorter... maby a 1/4 inch. This could be your problem.
sigh... that is an odd looking console cable. -

Yeah... bottom line... You must get a new cable!I'll just send you a cable. PM me an address and I'll send it, postage is on me. Seriously.
Speaking of which... hehe just kiddin' guys, I'll get a new cable I promise that, I really thought it was okay, I have one borrowed from a teacher (not home made), and gives me the same result, but of course that's not a guarantee, guess I shot myself in the foot
Ps: I think that would require international shipping -

Seems after all to be a faulty console port? -

Sounds like it. Sorry for your loss, maybe post it back up on eBay as in need of repair. Or use it a door stopper!
Just never turn up to work / customer site with one of those DIY console cables... ever! -

mm not really, looks kind of flawless, what I do notice is that the whole thing moves a bit, don't know if that's normal, but anyways can't hurt to say it I guess. -

I know this thread is a year old, but i just had the same issue with a 2950 (no keyboard input thru hyperterminal) and what fixed it was... ...taking the cover off and wiggling the console ribbon cable where it connects to the main board. Didn't remove it, just moved the ribbon in the connection a bit. Keyboard works great now.
