Modem problem with Win 98

I have an HP 6470Z Pavilion with Win 98. It has a riptide modem. I put a replacement modem in and it worked ok for a while. Now it will connect to my ISP verify password then it disconnects. Transfers about 491 bytes of info. My ISP says it is the drivers and the manufacturer says the unit checks out ok and the drivers are alright.
