Hi , im having problems trying to understand folder permissions. List Folder Contents and Read & Execute seem to have the same special permissions so whats the difference between them and when would i use one rather than the other?

First it's important to know that only folders can inherit both the List Folder Contents and Read & Execute permissions, while files can only inherit the Read & Execute permission.

List Folder Contents allows you to see the files listed in a folder. Read & Execute allows you to read the actual contents of the file and run files that are executable. If a file has Read & Execute permissions, but the directory does not have the List Folder Contents available, the user will be able to run or read the file but will not be able to browse to it.

For example, if the List Folder Contents is set for a folder C:\TestFolder and a file located inside it named test.txt has the Read & Execute permissions, then the user will be able to browse to C:\TestFolder and see all the files within that directory including test.txt. He'll then be able to open test.txt and view the contents. If the List Folder Contents is not enabled on C:\TestFolder then the user will not be able to see any files when browsing to that location including test.txt. He would, however, still be able to open the file by specifying the full filepath or UNC in a terminal or by using the Run command.
