Got my CCNA... now what?

Hi all,
I just passed my CCNA test and I am anxious to get started on a new certification. Currently I work in a help desk like role but I would like to eventually work in network engineering/security.
I was contemplating getting my MCITP in server admin but I would rather stick with the Cisco stuff. I know my way around a server, or at least 2003, but I don't have certifications to prove it.
First question: Is it possible to self-study for the CCNP certification?
Second question: Is it worth going towards my CCNP before I get a job with my CCNA?
Third question: I would like to have a second concentration in security. I was thinking of getting Security+ but wouldn't it be better to go right for the ISC2 Associate certification? I do not have the years of experience to get the CISSP yet but I have heard that the associate cert will open some doors for me.
Thanks for your help all.

Psoasman Member Posts: 2,687 ■■■■■■■■■□If you are interested in security, you could do the CCNA:Security or maybe Security+. Since you want to stick with networking, I'd just stay on the Cisco tracks.
If you are interested in more security, then I would read through this post.

Slowhand Mod Posts: 5,161 ModI think Psoasman and jamesleecoleman have given some great advice: Security+ would be a great way to go, but since you want to focus on network engineering then you might want to be thinking about the CCNP, as well as CCNA Security, CCNP Security, and possibly some Juniper certs down the road as well.
I can give you an example path I would take if I were in your situation:- Start reading Network Warrior 2nd Edition
- Pursue CCNA Security
- Pursue CCNP (ROUTE, SWITCH, and TSHOOT)
- Security+
- At least a basic Juniper cert, possibly more advanced stuff if you find it interesting
- CCNP Security
- Possibly Linux+ since you'll probably see some *NIX boxes in a datacenter or other NOC-related position
- And maybe even something like the Windows 7 MCTS (70-680) exam to cover all your bases
