monitor displaying grey colors as blue

When I turned on my desktop today that uses an older 15" HP lcd monitor (that I got in 2006 that uses vga) I noticed that the background login image that is grey appeared blue (On boot up I kept getting the not optimum resolution message. I hooked my desktop to my 20" monitor using the vga port to rule out possible graphics card/dvi-vga adapter issues. I even swapped out the vga cable on my HP monitor but the issue persists. I also hit the auto adjust button on the monitor but no luck. Any other ideas or is it simply a sign that the monitor is starting to die on me?
