Onboard video adapters

I recently encountered a problem in the real world that I haven't seen mentioned in any of the study material I own, and that is how to override the (annoying) onboard video on certain systems. My father-in-law purchased a new 128MB video card and asked me to install it for him. I installed it in an open PCI slot, then installed the driver software it came with. Everytime I rebooted, the system defaulted back to the old onboard video settings. The Device Manager (Windows9 didn't seem to help. Anybody have any ideas on what I may have been doing wrong?

no, as Mr. webmaster said you should be able to disable the video card in BIOS (CMOS) -

if that's the case, i would suggest installing the new vga as normal and then clearing the cmos (if there is no jumper for this, you will need to remove the battery for a short period). most bios will check the agp and pci bus for adapters first before using onboard vga.A+ Moderator
