Recruitment agencies?

I was just wondering has anyone used or have any experience of a recruitment agency? I'm living in Ireland at the moment and moving to London at the end of August. I have been applying to quite a few jobs but heard nothing back (I'm hoping its because I'm living in Ireland), so someone suggested a recruitment agency. My girlfriend joined one and they secured a job for her within a month, but she a school teacher, but it got me interested.
Has anyone used them? Or know someone that has? Are they worth the hassle?
Any information would be great guys.

Yes, recruiting firms are commonly used in IT. In the United States Robert Half and Teksystems are frequently mentioned. I'm working a contract through a recruiting firm right now. You're probably looking for a "contract-to-hire" type of job.
