I've had this same question ring in my head before as well. From what I can best figure, most cloud set-ups don't have redundancy, or if they do, they tend to go offline completely if the entire cloud goes offline.
The software company I work for has started using some cloud technology for their client's to have a central database for particular information. One day about a month ago that cloud server went down and affected 100% of our clients on a particular version (literally hundreds). It shocked me that we didn't have a redundancy back up in place for such an occasion considering that a cloud server used in such fashion basically becomes a single point of failure anyways for all clients who require that database.-Michael Palmer
