    PIO, Programmed Input/Output, is a method of data transfer used by ATA hard drives. There are about 4 or 5 modes, and mode 1 is faster than mode 0, etc. PIO modes are listed in HDD specs, I think. You can see the mode of your hard drives in CMOS setup.

    If you do a Google search, you'll probably find lots of info on it.
