Resume check over

tripolitrxtripolitrx Registered Users Posts: 5 ■□□□□□□□□□
Hi guys, i was advised in another thread on here to post my resume for you guys to look over, suggest hints/tips etc, if you see any issues, just let me know, it doesnt seem to be generating a great deal of interest. Also is it wise to put MS cert logos on your resume? I have them at the top of mine, mainly so it stands out a bit from other candidates, makes it a little more eye catching....anyway, thanks in advance

    a) Placing logos on resume is up to you, some hiring managers/HR people like it, some don't, it's a toss up.

    b) Change word "Overview" to "Summary".

    c) Re-word your new "Summary" statement, you have way too much punctuation in there. One rule of thumb in the "Summary" statement is to put exactly how many years of experience you have for the type of job you are applying for, such as "Experienced Microsoft IT Professional with 4 years experience........"

    d) Move education to the bottom of your resume since you actually do have real world IT experience, only place education at the top if you are a recent grad with 0 experience.

    e) Change "Professional Qualifications" to "Certifications", move this section directly under your "Experience" section.

    f) In the experience section, this is a toss up, some hiring managers/HR like a point by point style like you have laid out, but others like a general paragraph of your greatest accomplishments. If they are really interested in your talent and pull you in for the interview, you can then describe a point by point detail if needed.

    g) Move the "Skills" section to be near the top, below your "Summary" statement and above your "Experience" section. Again this is a toss up, but if you are a professional and you have graduated college - which you are and you have - the employer will expect you to understand how to communicate and be part of a team. That would be an unwritten skill, much like you know how to drive a car or change a light bulb. In this "Skills" section list skills for the type of job you are applying (IT) and consider quantifying those skills, ie: 5 years of experience with DameWare.

    h) I would consider axing the "Additional Information" section too, don't give anyone a reason NOT to hire you just because you are not a US born citizen, its sad - and it is against the law, but discrimination does happen every single day

    i) Last thing, I just saw in your experience section that you came up with 14 bullet points with your most recent position as an IT Support Technical Engineer, but your IT Administrator 1997 - 2005 has 1 bullet point? Surely this was an oversight, if not, you certainly need to add more beef. Same thing for the one above it - Co-Owner and Administrator 2005 - 2007

Hi, thanks for the response, very much appreciated. i will definitely implement the majority of changes you suggested

In regards to the two jobs with a lacking description, these positions were very small scale, and i guess a little simple for a corporate position. Things like buildings PCs, maintenance, patching, basic networking/wifi and backup, not really something in my opinion at least would be too pertinent to a corporate desktop role or similar. The web admin could be useful as there was a bit of coding involved (Jscript/HTML), lots of Dreamweaver and flash action to, as well as general business operations stuff, but again, unless a position mentions those those as a plus or requirement, I chose to omit them.

Also i wanted to keep the size down, i have been told by many people including colleagues never to go over 2 pages for a resume, so that's the main reason, i figured keep the more relevant stuff in there and get rid of the less important stuff, is this a mistake?

i know there are a good few years at the last position, but it was all self taught stuff while i was doing my degree.

Thanks again for the assistance, really appreciated!

Attaching a Word or PDF would make it easier to critique.

For your certifications, I would just list the cert. These things you have like "Self-Taught via Microsoft Training" aren't going to matter to anyone. They care that you have the cert, that's it. The extra stuff is just wasted space.

    a) Re: small scale jobs - in my opinion, professional experience is professional experience, if you have it and it is relevant to the position to which you want to achieve, list it.

    b) Re: resume length - this changes with the wind and the hiring manager. Some like detailed work history and everything you have done in your life, some do not. This is up to you and will be a coin toss. Consider though that most job sites today offer multiple slots for you to upload a resume. Why not make a condensed version and a fully detailed version and upload them both? I think Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com have 5 slots for you to upload a resume. If the job site in question does not offer multiple slots for your resume an option may be to make more than one account for that job site.
