GPO update time before seen on client?

Ive got a new Windows2003 server and am learning (messing) with AD, group policies, OU's etc as I go.

If I edit a Group policy how long before the update will be picked up by the clients?
If I alter say a very simple thing in the group policy on the server such as remove recycle bin from the desktop. I go to the PC which is on the next desk and log off and on again the change isn't seen - how long would I expect to wait?

The AD is vanilla as installed apart from two users I have created, one OU and one GP so it can't be the amount of objects.

You could always use the command line gpupdate. It would automatically force an update to the local pc's group policy. Then you can run rsop.msc to see if the new changes in your group policy took effect.
