General home network question

in CCNA & CCENT
I have my laptop and a PC on my network. I'm using a regular home Linksys (Cisco) wireless router with 4 wired ports. I normally keep my Wifi enabled on my laptop, but when I'm home I usually plug in the network cable... but also often forget to turn off the Wifi access. I was copying files from a folder on my PC to my laptop (just under 4GB worth) and noticed it took almost a half-hour. Typically, that amount of data takes less than 10 minutes.
I was under the assumption that when you plug in the network cable, although both connections are available, it would automatically default to the wired connection since it's capable of faster file transfer. Is this true? Does it load balance at all? Could it just be the transfer was just slow because of the types of or amount of files? Is there some way to tell which connection it's using (wired/wireless)?
*I realize I just got my CCNA but the course doesn't cover home wireless routers... lol

If you're using Windows 7, go into the Network Connections, press F10 to get the menu bar to show. Click on Advanced -> Advanced Settings. Under the Adapters and Bindings tab, reorder the connection so that your LAN is above the wireless. -

If you are using XP, Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Advanced menu > Advanced Settings > in the connections box reorder them as you want them to be.
Wireless has precedence by default.
