Can you guys give me tips on how to get tomorrow off. i have time in the books - i don't mind taking a vacation. Bad planning. Dont take vacation days off to have interviews. Dont call in sick to have an interview. The interview you may tank, or you may ace and the company never makes you an offer. Negotiate with agencies to have interviews over the phone after work or in the evening after work.

Depends on how you normally communicate with boss. If you have vacation time, just tell you boss you need to use a day of vacation time tomorrow. No need to be specific. If pressed, just tell him it is personal. Simple enough. Make sure that you make it clear that it is not a request, but rather notice from you to him about the day off.

Thats exactly what I was going to do. But, I wanted to hear what you guys think.

I don't think I can have a phone interview with this state agency. They want me to come in for a face-to-face interview so there is really nothing i can do.

That's not always possible...a lot of companies will do a phone screening, but will want to meet you face to face. When you work the 9-5 shift in areas with heavy traffic, you're more than likely need some time off for the interview.

It's not always possible, but its worth explaining to agencies your availabilty for interviews as some companies are understanding and can work around your hours.

I've been going through a few interviews myself and I usually schedule them before or after work. I earn vacation hours instead of days so I just let whoever know that I'll be a little late/be leaving a little early a few days before the interview. So I only lose out on maybe an hour or two of vacation instead of an entire day. Only once did I take a day off for interviews, but I had a few of them and they took up the entire morning so I figured I may as well take the whole day off and enjoy the afternoon to reflect upon the interviews and how well I think I did. Of course, I don't think there's anything wrong with taking a day off for an interview as long as you do something meaningful with the rest of the day like go watch a movie or something. That way if you don't get the job, you can at least say some good came out of it. :)

I guess I always try my best to ask as many questions as possible when they initially call trying to setup an interview.
I think determine if I can either just take an extended lunch, or if I need to take a half PTO.

Anyways, good luck on your interview!! Let us know how it goes.

i just got back from the interview and it went great. The IT Manager said there will be a second interview with the director. By next week thursday, I 'll hear something. I seems like I got everything they are looking for and they are trying to hire 2 people.

One thing I noticed is why other IT specialist are hourly and the Desktop support - Exempt. It doesn't make sense.
