Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 12.3 and below were SDM and 12.4 and above was designed for Cisco Configuration Professional which is the upgrade to SDM. Are newer IOS versions backwards compatible with SDM?

A few other things to look at:

    1) What java version are you running? SDM is known to be very finicky. I'm running java 5.0 update 17 which I had to downgrade to to get all the SDM features to work inlcuding VPN.

    2) You said you have a 12.4 ios but what feature set does the IOS have? Check cisco feature navigator and verify that is supports vpn. if not you need to get one that does.

    HTH

I'm running 12.4T/15.0 advanced IP services IOS on a 877 with SDM v2.5, 12.3 IOS is probably past its use-by date by now. I think the minimum IOS feature set recommended is advanced security.

SDM works for the older 850/1700/2600/1800/2800 series routers (and others).
CCP works on the more recent 870/1800/2800/1900/2900 series routers (and others). You'd need to check the release notes for the full list.

Java versions are a bit hit and miss unfortunately. Under Windows 7 SP1, I'm running Java 6.0 update 11, this works for me and allows me to run either SDM or CCP.

Multiple releases of Java can be installed side-by-side, so on a Windows/Linux/OS X PC there's (usually) never a reason to uninstall one release of Java before installing another. Older Java releases have many security flaws, and Java (JRE, JDK) earlier than R6.0 should never be used if at all possible.

So the 1800's and 2800's are both older and more recent? icon_lol.gif

Its just a Cisco thing... the 1800/2800's get the best of both worlds.
