If you are not in the industry, you should perhaps skip these exams. The 646 is not easy and will require serious effort which coupled with you not being in the industry, would make it even harder. Not saying it aint doable, but it's not going to be easy. The 679 seems to be like a mix of a few exams with a few things thrown in there. Shouldnt be too hard if you put in the effort.

Nov 2004 You've either been away a long time or hacked into a long dormant account.

Looking at that 70-679 I would be really hesitant to mess with it. It's very broad and includes a lot of "how to" along with the "why or when would you" type of questions (judging by the skills measured) and includes material you would see on the 70-646 (with quite a few extras thrown in). With no recommended reading on the ms site Windows Server 2008 Hosted Environments, Configuring and Managing for the 679 I wouldn't touch it unless that was what I was working with.
No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives.

If you're not in the industry why are you getting certified?

If its just a hobby then save the money you are spending on getting certified to spend on getting new and advanced toys to play with to continue advancing your skill and hobby.

There's no reason to get certifications if you're only in it as a hobby.

Heck an argument could be made that there's no need to get certs if you're in the field. Most people get certs because their employer requires them or because they want to leverage them into a promotion or higher pay or use them as a resume booster to get a better job(sometimes all 3).

I'm very confused... Entry-level or not, that is a lot of certifications to get for someone not in the industry.

i started way back then with the plan in getting a job in I.T
i deployed overseas 3 years in a row with the army , so i fell behind
computer power went bankrupt with one module to go., $10'000 later........well
if i see a job advertised i sometimes submit my resume just to see .
i have been thinking maybe SBS 2011 gives me the basics of a server plus exchange and share point basics

In my opinion you already have sufficient certification and probably sufficient skill to at least get an entry-level job. From there, you should either work towards MCITP: Server Administrator or MCITP: Enterprise Administrator.
