hey
let me start off by saying I am currently a student at a community college and will graduate in May 2012 in AAS Information Technology and Network Security. I started the program in Spring 2010 and finally have the confident in myself to apply for entry level positions. This forums really help motivate me in pursuing a career in IT and i just want to say Thanks to everybody for the advice and encouragement!
Anyways let get this rolling!
I sent my resume to a banking company about two weeks and the position title is Desktop Support internship. I had a missed called with an area code from another state and later that night got an email saying they tried calling and would like to set up a phone interview soon. My question is what kind of questions will be asked and what should I expect?
I am so excited and nervous at the same time because this is going to be my step into the IT world!
thanks
-Ken

MentholMoose Member Posts: 1,525 ■■■■■■■■□□I got started in IT with a desktop support internship at a bank. I haven't done desktop support in years so I can't help much with specific questions, but I would expect questions about 1) PC hardware, 2) PC software, 3) general customer service issues, and 4) the company and industry. Read about the company on their website and Wikipedia (if there is an entry for it) and search Google for "desktop support interview questions". Banks generally seem to be slow to upgrade their standard desktop OS so they are likely still using XP, so if you might want to brush up on your XP knowledge if you've been using Vista/7 for a long time. Good luck.MentholMoose

FloOz Member Posts: 1,614 ■■■■□□□□□□well im actually interning right now in both network services and desktop services. during my interview (it was a face to face interview with the director) she asked me about all the classes ive taken and what ive learned. My favorite/least favorite class etc... She also went through my entire resume and asked me stuff off that. I wouldnt expect you to get asked technical questions because they know your still a college student.

A little info on the position: Desktop Support Internship 20hrs per week
The internship is what i've been waiting for. It will allow me to gain experience and have an idea how it is in the IT field.
I've been doing some research on phone interviews and reading previous threads on desktop support and interviews.
I'm currently a student and will be graduating in May 2012. On my resume I listed my majors, a list of courses that I thought might help, some certs, hands on skills training from the school, and customer service experience. I really don't have any real IT experience. I'm going to use my personality to land the position lol. My first time making a resume lol
HR called Wednesday at noon(didn't pick up...missed called), they sent me an email around 3pm Wednesday stating they tried calling and requested a date and time for a phone interview, but I didn't see the email until the next day. It was in the spam folder and as soon as i saw it i called right away, but no one picked up, then I replied to their email.
now i'm concern that might decrease my chances on getting the position.
I will be calling them around noon today
wish me luck! -
FloOz Member Posts: 1,614 ■■■■□□□□□□nah it wont decrease your chances. they know you have a life and that you are in school. im sure you will do fine and get the job. just dont be nervous is my best advice. i can tell you i was really nervous during my interview and it sucked ha.

ikoolguy Member Posts: 8 ■□□□□□□□□□thanks for the heads up.
should i wait for HR to email me back or call later on today? -
xenodamus Member Posts: 758I wouldn't stress too much about the questions they'll ask. Being that it's an internship, they shouldn't be expecting anything grand.
I supervise a desktop support team and if I were to interview you, I would be more interested in finding out what your basic knowledge/experience level is and where your interest lies short/long term. I would save the real technical questions for someone applying for a full time $20/hr desktop support position. The word internship to me implies a learning experience.CISSP | CCNA:R&S/Security | MCSA 2003 | A+ S+ | VCP6-DTM | CCA-V CCP-V -
snokerpoker Member Posts: 661 ■■■■□□□□□□Normally in these phone calls the interviewer will ask you about your educational background, which certifications you have (if any), and your career goals. Depending on your answers they could throw in a couple simple troubleshooting questions or whether you feel comfortable doing certain tasks or not. They might ask other questions regarding what activities you partake in outside of the realm of IT. To be honest I wouldn't stress too much over the call.

ikoolguy Member Posts: 8 ■□□□□□□□□□called today and got hr voice mail saying they won't be avialable today. then thought it would be a good idea to email HR informing them i called and apologized for not contacting them sooner and BAM got an automatic email replied saying...
"I will be in meetings on Friday, January 6th and conducting New Hire Orientation on Monday, January 9th. I will respond to email as time permits. For immediate assistance, please call 555-555-5555"
so atm i am kicking myself and accepting the fact i missed a great opportunity.
should i wait until monday or call the assistance? -
xenodamus Member Posts: 758I don't think you've missed any opportunity.
HR people stay busy. I wouldn't call the number. If you do, the HR person you talk to probably won't be familiar with you or your situation. Just give it some time and give them a chance to respond. I promise the situation is not as bad as you think. She'll check her email eventually, and contact you again. Really.CISSP | CCNA:R&S/Security | MCSA 2003 | A+ S+ | VCP6-DTM | CCA-V CCP-V -
