Microsoft Technology Associate Question

Hey guys / gals,

Not sure where to put this one as it does not seem to fall under any of the other Cert topics.

I have zero experience with Microsoft server environments and am looking to take a dive into it. While I would not waste my money to actually attain the MTA Windows Server Admin Fundamentals cert, I am curious if it would be a good intoduction prior to starting the MCTS / MCITP path.

Would this study program provide any benefit for someone who has experience in other topics or would I just be wasting my time reviewing the extreme basics?

Thanks.

I think studying for, taking, and passing Network+ would be a more valuable use of your time. Jumping straight into the 70-640 or 70-680 material with a heavy lab focus would also be a better use of your time.

Personally speaking, I would say that the MTA's are a good fundamentals cert (and the training along side) that provides a good grounding for future certs.

I actually put my tech's on them (OS, server, networks and security) before they do the MCTS/MCITP level.

Depends on the individual, I took them (being the IT manager) as well as the Senior IT Tech to see what it encompassed (as well as something extra for our appraisals) before we rolled them out to other tech's. We actually found them to be useful, basic but useful. Added to that it does show that you have a certain level of knowledge.

Going back to your question of whether it would benefit someone who has experience in other topics... Well yes it would, if you were an experience network admin with limited programming knowledge (I'm not talking scripts, but "proper" programming) the MTA in Software Development Fundamentals would be valuable (and vice versa).

Ok, thanks. As always, it is nice to hear from others in the industry before making a decision. I think I will look at a few practice exams and see if I know the information and go from there.

    Thanks again.
