Excel Changes URL Paths on SharePoint Docs

We experienced a crazy issue today that had me literally thinking that a group of users was completely and totally insane. It turns out, though, the problem was exactly as they described it.
When an Excel document on a SharePoint document library was checked out and the option to checkout to local drafts was checked URLs in the Excel document would be modified to a relative path on the user's local system drive.
This is not a SharePoint issue but it is a known client side (i.e. Excel) issue that has no resolution EXCEPT to not select check out to local drafts. The default setting for whether this is checked by default is configured in Excel under options.
Excel 2010 File => Options => Save "Offline editing options for document management server files"
Hope this saves some one some times testing.
