Cisco Upgrades Catalyst, Nexus Switches to Support 40GbE and 100GbE
Networking hardware maker Cisco Systems is blessing its two key switch lines with 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet capabilities - a move that is likely to offer data centre administrators a new way to facilitate much faster network even when the traffic is high.
In addition, the new offering will also help administrators to make the proceedings much quicker when it comes to moving workloads into the cloud. As a matter of fact, the company had started shipping its popular 10 GE switches way back in 2002, and over the next 10 years, managed to sell over 10 million units.
The networking giant announced on Feb 1 at the Cisco Live Event that the company is going to equip its Catalyst 6500 switches with 40 Gigabit Ethernet support. Apart from that, the Nexus 7000 family line is also going to get its fair share of 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet capabilities.
"Across the data center landscape, we are seeing a series of megatrends," Shashi Kiran, the director of marketing for Cisco's Data Center Solutions group, said in an exclusive statement to the website eWEEK.
With growing competition from other players such as Juniper, Huawei and HP, Cisco spent a good one year to concentrate on its core business which includes switching.
"The growing support for 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet will help keep Cisco ahead of those competitors", Kiran added.
