I don't even need to read that, if I am leaving I am leaving for a reason and a counter offer means nothing to me.

    I second that opinion.

Why did you start looking; if only to accept a counter offer?

At my last job, for some reason 3 of the 4 people that left during the time I worked there (and one who had been fired) actually came back either before or just after I left. The one who had been fired actually was called to come back to replace me when I put in my 2 weeks notice.

I never understood it, but it seemed to have worked out well for them, without any bad feelings or anything.

It seems I am at a fork in the road, where I have decided to blaze a new path to a new employer. Right now I am a contractor, and due to changes in the job situation of my wife, I decided to entertain a few of the many recruiter requests hitting my inbox. One of them panned out, and is an great opportunity to work in a field that has immense interest to me. After I put in my notice, my current boss was wanting me to apply for an open position of theirs that has appeared all of a sudden. I understand their motives, and believe them genuine, but this isn't guaranteed, and I would be stuck for at least another year in the same position if I "applied" for the counter, whereas I already have an offer from the new employer... Money isn't everything. Work-life balance, and opportunities to work with different security-related technologies, and the opportunity to travel. Hard to pass up.

LinuxRacr, it seems you've solved your own problem. "...but this isn't guaranteed" with regards to the current position, and "It's hard to pass up" with regards to the new position. You decided to leave for a reason, don't look back. Move up and on.
