About to go to work for a small telcom. They sell a lot of hosted solutions and resell from a couple sip providers.. Long term they would like to become a SIP provider.. So I am going to be drinking from a fire hose and am looking for any SIP resources that you guys might have..

well for SIP read the CISCO book SIP trunking. Even though its specific to Cisco it will give a good idea about how sip works in several situations. Also it references the RFC's you will need to get good at it. Dealing with SIP a lot of guys just dont' know what they are doing. A good base in IP routing will be essential to getting good with sip as one way audio audio and dropped calls are all over the place.

anyone have any recommendations for SIP equipment vendors?

what are you trying to do with your SIP device? You got your basic sip devices that all serve different purposes.

Providing phone service to clients over T1s. Would like to scrap it where possible and convert them to SIP, but we want to be the SIP provider in this case versus a traditional SIP provider or reseller..

hahaha your stepping on my toes a little bit with your plan. It depends on how much capacity you are looking to move. You can get it done with Asterisk or freeswitch, but are you going to send them to the PSTN yourself or are you going to feed them off to another vendor upstream?

Not a lot short term we are taking 30-40 phones over 10 clients.. But we are going from a rock solid solution to one with a few more variables so we are willing to pay for a turn key solution with support versus doing it in house with opensourse etc.. We have solid pricing from a couple sip providers.. Still testing the water to see where our break even is based on cost of equipment/support of doing it in house versus using them..
Long term it would be much bigger, but we got to get there from a expertise standpoint and a staffing standpoint..
PSTN in house..
