Different sampling rate during playback?

For ex. assume you are playing Skyrim or listening to music(i mean some application containing audio) and the sample rate on your Realtek HD sound card is selected as 16-bit 44100 Hz. However, once the sample rate is "even" raised to a higher value, nothing changes in terms of hearing the sound coming out. Why not?

In theory, higher sampling rate defines better sound quality due to increased number of samples taken and more close to original sound. On the other hand, the bit depth means the number of bits used on each sample leads us to variety and more dynamic range with the low noise and pure loudness.
