What is a generic router and what is it used for?

By my understanding, it's a home/small business router with no access to any advanced configurations or CLI, with minimal functionality designed to connect you to a consumer grade ISP and provide LAN to WAN connectivity to a small number of clients/home users.

In Packet Tracer, put one of them on the workspace, click on it, then click Physical. It will show you the back side of the router and give you the available modules you can install.
