pix 501
Ive been wanting to explore the security route and I see pix 501 fairly cheap for $20. Is there any value of playing around with one in comparison to a asa 5505.

PIX will provide a good starting point but its being phased out (in both production and certifications) by the ASA's.
For 20 bucks though can you go wrong? My Networking blog
