What is backbone router?

Please can any one explain what is backbone router. I don't want to google it.

    Anyway, backbone routers are, well, the backbone to any network. They're usually the beast of routers that can handle a lot of processing and usually have a lot of memory.

    Also, it depends on the routing protocol used, but their routing tables are usually pretty big.

    Googling is an essential part of the job when it comes to networking or IT in general.

    They are the ones that do all the work. You can have the little stubs and the minor routers, but the backbone routers are the ones that have the big pipes and connect the major networks together. Similar to a highway. All the little roads and in-town roads are for localities. Once you hit a freeway, it's fast and direct to other places.

    Hey,

    Both answers provided are good but if your referring to OSPF a backbone router is any router that has an interface connected to the Backbone (area 0) So all this includes all ABRs etc..

    However i'm no expert lol
