Explain the Internet (in one sentence) :)

I was asked to do this the other day and wasn't able to. Maybe it's just me, but explaining the internet in one sentence is a lot harder than it seems. I guess I just can't simplify it enough, so I resorted to telling the person it was all magic. icon_lol.gif Not sure if they believed me...

One of the most common short definitions is "a global network of networks". What is your audience? What was the purpose of trying to explain it in one sentence? Yes, I tend to over-analyze stuff.

    Q: What is the Internet?

A: The Internet is a series of tubes designed to facilitate efficient distribution of funny cat photos.

The internet is a network of networks. That is the response I'd have given.

Best I can come up with at the moment is this. It's pretty vague and i dont know what context or additional parameters may be required.

The internet is a worldwide network of shared knowledge and social interaction.

There is only ONE Internet, so capitalize the "I".

    ;)

***I'll add you can Capitalize the word 'I' to show a little respect for yourself too.

    'i' before 'e' except after 'c'.... weird?

    "It's a series of tubes."

    No, but really...

The Internet is the decentralized, international, intercontinental, computer network consisting of public, private, and governmental computer networks.

Maybe that doesn't explain it, but it at least defines it in one sentence.

The Internet is that which connects all the peoples of the world together; but only if you pay your power bill.

I was actually asked to explain "What happens when I ping Google?", at a recent job interview. I spent a good 45 minutes explaining the most basic, high-level aspects of how the Internet works. ;)
