I am currently a full-time student working on an Information Systems degree, so no job yet. I was told by a few friends that I should finish the basic three certs (A+, Net+ and Sec+) before choosing a path. I do, however, plan to go down the networking career path then transitioning to security. Any advice based on my situation?

Darril Member Posts: 1,588I'd say you are getting good advice from your friends. In your situation, there are two benefits to getting this trio of certs.
First, it helps lay a solid foundation of current and realistic IT based information needed for many different IT related jobs. A degree is very valuable for the long term, but sometimes the information is dated or theoretical.
Second, it exposes you to a variety of IT-related information to give you get an idea of what you like. Common career advice for anyone is "do what you enjoy." If you enjoy the work you do, you'll always do better. The challenge early in a career is trying to figure out what you enjoy before you've tried it.
Good luck. -

Thanks for the advice. I just ordered your book through Amazon and plan on taking Security + at the end of the month. Will post results upon completion. -
