proxy server / subnet mask question

I've been looking though some test questions with regards the Internet Explorer settings
e.g. typical question - user cannot connect to local intranet site
1) bypass proxy server for local addresses - I think i understand this.
2) add an exception in the proxy settings above - when does this apply?
3) How can you tell if the subnet mask is wrong as opposed to the above?
I'm confused as to when its an "exception" problem rather than a wrong subnet mask problem
Any ideas please, got my 70-682 in a week or so

lantech Member Posts: 329With regards to number 3 you probably would have to do some subnetting to figure that out.
Don't they teach that anymore for the MS tests2012 Certification Goals

Do you?
How does IE determine if a server is local?
How does IE handle single lable server names vs. fully qualified domain names vs. IP addresses when used to connect to internal servers, particularly servers hosting sites that used integrated Windows authentication?
How does IE8 apply compatibility mode on intranet sites vs internet sites?
How can you add sites to the Intranet zone?
Don't overcomplicate it. Work through the OSI layers to see where the fault lies. There is no need to make a group policy change that affects every workstation if you have a bad subnet mask in a DHCP scope somewhere. In other words, figure it out on the exam the same way you troubleshoot it in the real world. -

This is the advice I need for tomorrow on the 70-680. Great sentence here! -

Thanks for the replies all.
Got the 70-682 exam on wednesday, so the plan is to do my best and also heed the above advice.
I realise that these types of questions can be rather tricky unless they are broken down to real-life scenarios.
