I have to teach an introduction to VMware class in a few weeks to a NOC. I've done it a few times before. Just general setup and troubleshooting. Think provisioning concepts etc.
In the past I used workstations but they have some budget now and we're setting up a lab for the NOC to use in the long run for their continuing education.
Just looking for some cheap server recommendations?
Figure I need 3 servers. Shooting for ~1k each.

HP DL380 G5 Xeon's with 8GB RAM (or possibly more) each should easily come under that price range and are good enough for a lab. I'd run ESXi on 2 servers and use the 3rd as a SAN (OpenFiler, Starwind). Or maybe buy one G6 with tons of RAM and show them nested ESXi (I have this setup, though not on a G6 and it works well).
