Help with taking the Security+ exam

Hello, im new to this site and was reffered by co-worker, As of now i have an Associates degree in Network Administration and work for a large Government Contractor, his recommendation is that i take the Security + as the first Cert. Im looking for any advice tips material on studying for this exam and i guess it varies but how long should i study before a take a shot at passing the exam, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance.
