Erasing VLANs? where do they exist?

I decided to post this here as i'm sure its more of a CCNA topic. I seem to be quite rusty on the CCNA material as today was the first time in nearly 6 months I had a go at configuring vtp and vlans. Just goes to show you really got to keep doing it otherwise you forget stuff.
I setup a few vlans and created a VTP domain. Afterwards I did a "write erase". It then asked me whether I wanted to save the config so i selected No. I did a reload of the switch but the vlans and vtp stuff still remained. It then struck me that i remember reading somewhere that it is stored elsewhere? not in startup-config?
What did i do wrong?
also is doing a write erase the recommended way of deleting the startup-config?

I'm an Xpert at nothing apart from remembering useless information that nobody else cares about.

Interesting read.
