Where to go from here?

Hello,

I began my IT journey just about a year ago. I enrolled in a local community college last fall, and this summer I completed two certificates of completion in Linux Networking Administration and Networking Technology: Cisco, both with a 4.0 GPA . Since then, I have also completed the A+, CCNA, and VCP4/5 certs. I have been working at BB (Geek Squad) for the past seven months. At this point I am ready to move on to a more challenging and rewarding position.

This is where I turn to techexams... I really dont know where to go from here. Should I look for something in Help Desk to continue to build my resume/experience? Should I be aiming higher? What positions should I be looking at? I am also interested in knowing where I should be salary wise. Thank you!

Whoa! Judging by your list of qualifications, I expect your phone to be ringing off the hook by now. You can go any direction if you like. Your success is greater if you choose the path you enjoy the most. Do you at least find one of the areas appealing? If so, then that's where you should build up your skill and career from.

Welcome to TE. It depends on what you want to do eventually with your IT career and where you are located. If you're in a busy IT hotspot, it might be easier for you to jump directly into an entry-level NOC or system admin position. If you're in the boonies somewhere, you might have to take a help desk job and try to work your way into another department. The important part is to get yourself out there and get some experience doing something different than Best Buy (Not dissing that experience at all). Once you have your first year under your belt, it gets easier. Good luck!

You've got enough certs to make a fair wage, but the experience factor is missing. Call up every recruiter in your area. Call up every MSP. Let your friends and family know you're looking. Try datacenters. The market is flooded with guys with mediocre Windows admin skills. To stand out you just need to be really strong in at least one area. It sounds like virtualization might be where you need to hone your skills for now, since you already have certs down that road. Anywhere that will give you hands on experience is where you need to be for the next 1-2 years.
