Changing certifications gears Switching from Windows 70-680 configure to Windows server 2008R2

Changing certifications gears Switching from Windows 70-680 configure to Windows server 2008R2
Well I have tried to knock out the 70-680, but find it hard to get motivated to study deploying Windows 7. I would really like to study for the MCSA certification. It seems like I always stumble upon a job asking about Active Directory/2008R2 experience. I do have a few questions…

1. Will the 70-680 and 70-685 expire in July 2013? Does this mean that after this time there will only be Windows 8 client exams?

2. Are the MCSA exams easier when compared to the Windows 7 exams, because they’re number lowered when compared to the 70-680, 70-685?

3. Does each test you pass equal one MCTS certification?

I really want to understand the concepts of server 2008R2

    1. No you will still retain the certifications
    2. Not on your life!
    3. Yup!

    1. No the MCITP moniker is going away in July 2013 and it will just be MCSA Desktop support or something like that.
    2. The numbers in the title do not rank the difficulty of the test.
    3. Each test passed that is not a pro exam will give you a MCTS. (70-646 or 70-647 will not give you a MCTS alone)
    4. Good luck.

Hold on a sec -- there is no information from Microsoft indicating that 70-685 will still do anything after July 2013. MCITP:EDA is no longer available after July 2013, and 70-685 does not currently count towards any other certifications. This is in contrast with 70-646, which will still be available and count towards MCSA 2008 even after the MCITP title ceases to be available.

That being said, I have never really seen a lot of value in EDA7. It might be a great differentiator for a desktop support job, but realistically you don't need it to get those jobs and it's actually a fair amount of work to get. The server exams and MCITP:SA/MCSA 2008 have much more value for not really being much more difficult or time-consuming to achieve. And yes, you will see a lot more jobs overall asking for the server-side skills, particularly asking for certification in the server side skills.

I jumped right into studying the 70-680, thinking it would be a breeze. Its an understatement to say the exam was more in-depth than I ever expected.

If you go back and browse through some of the older postings, you'll see several that say they found the 680 to be an easier exam because they had already taken the 640, 642 and 643 exams.
