70-680 questions

Ive been trying to work my way through the don poulton book over the last couple of months but its harder than i thought and due to work i dont have a great deal of time to put into it. Is the 70-680 going to be retired next july? If so why because i wouldnt say many companies would want to go to windows 8 for their needs and hope 7 will stick around like xp did. Will a new win 7 equivalent exam be coming out?

Im just worried i might not be able to pass it in time, if it is retiring.

Also ive gotten to the USMT in the book and have just installed the WAIK in enterprise and am now attempting to setup server 2008 r2, what roles and features would you advise me to use in the server for labbing needs?

Btw im trying to do this exam with very little experience with this sort of thing, i have a couple of qualifications in it from school but that was just excel, website creating etc, nothing usefull in the slightest. Im more up on hardware than software tbh from building several pc's, updating them etc. So bear that in mind.

Another great site you should check out for the 70-680 exam is Professor Messer. His Videos are available on youtube and are a great source of knowledge.

For Server 2008 R2 installation, I do not setup any roles and features -- just a plain vanilla install of either core or full Windows Server. That's because my labs focus on certain roles and their respective features, and I just generate them as I need them. Do so through a (more or less permanent) WDT (not WAIK) now. I try to incorporate updates to the most recent service pack level. Makes for a quick install.

You may eventually want to create script or powerscript file to populate your AD DS with a standardized set of users and computers. Saves time when wanting to start with a clean directory.

70-680 won't be one of the exams retiring next year.

Until January 31, 2014, when you earn your MCSA: Windows 7 certification you will also earn your Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS): Windows 7, Configuration and either your MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Administrator (exams 680 and 686) or MCTIP: Enterprise Desktop Support Technician (exams 680 and 685).
The MCSA: Windows 7 certification will remain in market and will not retire until one of the following occurs:

    • Two newer versions of the Microsoft technology are available (for example, Windows 7 and Windows 8 are newer versions of Microsoft Windows Vista client technology).
    • Markets around the world are no longer using the product version on which the exam is based.
    • The ongoing exam maintenance can no longer be supported.
    • Too few people are taking an exam.

      Reference: Windows 7 Certification
